HEMPFLEX SKATEBOARDS
The cultivation of hemp started 8500 years ago in Central Asia. In the 16th and 17th centuries, hemp was among the main textile plants cultivated in the world, producing a strong and long lasting fabric, as well as the best ropes known to Man. So, with hemp nearly being the strongest fiber that can be found in nature, it was obvious to try to use it to create a hemp-fiber skateboard deck that would be almost unbreakable...
We worked with a European-based company that has been involved in the ecological research and production of reinforced materials. The company’s experience in working with all kinds of fibers enabled them to start developing a hemp deck. The boards are made out of 80% hemp fibers, mixed with Kevlar and carbon. We developed one shape and have two short flex models available (see profile) . The result is an exceptionally strong yet flexible deck ready for a fast street ride.
As you know, part of the TH3 philosophy is also to look beyond the obvious. Hemp is not only one of the strongest fibers around, but it especially offers an ecological alternative to the manufacturing of traditional skateboard decks. Today, it seems like a non-sense to cut down old maple trees to produce fast breaking decks, when it takes hemp only 6 months to grow before we can produce long lasting and nearly unbreakable ones.
Reducing global warming involves saving our forests, but it also demands to consider greener means of transportation.
